James Gunn Reveals How Guardians of The Galaxy Scripts are Adapted for Groot’s Dialogue

Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has undergone one of the biggest and most elaborate changes of any Marvel Cinematic Universe character so far. Having started out as an adult, the character’s sacrifice in the first Guardians movie saw him reborn as “Baby Groot,” and now, as the series heads into its third film, Groot is a young adult. No matter what his age, though, one thing that never changes is his single, all-encompassing line of “I Am Groot,” spoken with aplomb by Vin Diesel. Recently director James Gunn shared on his Twitter account that when it comes to the cast getting a script full of “I Am Groot” lines, he helps out in letting them know what it all means.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is set to hit theaters in May 2023, but before then, there will be a Holiday special on Disney+ and Groot also has his own spin-off series of shorts, appropriately entitled, I Am Groot. While audiences are usually able to decipher what it is Groot is saying thanks to the characters who interact with him, James Gunn has revealed that there are usually two scripts depending on whether a character understands Groot or not. He wrote:

“In the scripts for crew and cast that don’t understand Groot it says “I am Groot.” But I also have scripts available for those who understand Groot with the translations in them.”

The slight alteration obviously helps the scenes involving Groot play out on screen much as they do in theaters, with audiences having to rely on a small group of the Guardians to elaborate on the many I am Groots that litter the movies. It also clearly means that Gunn himself doesn’t have to direct reactions to Groot’s lines from the likes of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, who can simply gauge a suitable tone based on the actual meaning of Groot’s words.

Guardians of the Galaxy is the End of the Road for Some Characters

Marvel Studios

Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is not a big cross-over event movie, it is going to be an integral part of the MCU’s story as some popular characters bow out of the franchise. Although there has been no official word on any of the major departures or how exactly these characters will leave the franchise, Dave Bautista has seemingly made it clear that his time in the Marvel franchise is at an end. He previously said:

“I am going to be 54 years old by the time 3 comes out, and the shirtless thing is getting harder and harder for me. The journey has come full circle and I’m just ready to kind of step aside and wrap it up.”

Despite claims about his age, Bautista certainly isn’t about to vanish from screens anytime soon. Having integrated himself into franchises such as Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, and set to appear with Jason Momoa in their “buddy cop action comedy,” the former wrestling star is certainly not short of work to keep him busy in the future.

I Am Groot debuts on Disney+ on August 10. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is expected to arrive on Disney+ this holiday season, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scheduled to premiere in movie theaters on May 5, 2023.
