The Suicide Squad star Idris Elba often finds himself in the top 3 choices for the next James Bond, but is he even being considered for the iconic role now that Daniel Craig has walked away? Well, speaking with Variety, 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have discussed the idea of Elba slipping on the tux, and while they can see the actor in the role, time and commitment will play a factor in who will next hold the license to kill.
“We love Idris. The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off. And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10-, 12-year commitment. So he’s probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing?’ Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].”
So, while Elba is usually at the top of everyone’s James Bond fan-casting lists alongside the likes of Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, and Regé-Jean Page, it sounds like the producers will be looking elsewhere as both the passage of time and a decade-long commitment seemingly rule Elba out of the running.

For what it’s worth, Idris Elba himself does not sound too keen to take on the role of 007 anyway. The actor commented on the constant questions about his potential as James Bond last month, saying, “I have no more answers for it. I just tell people, ‘aw, don’t ask me that.’ Because a lot of times, it’s really lazy journalism. And people try to use it as clickbait like ‘what’s he gonna say this time?’ I try to say the same things. Every now and then I just tease them, but every now and then I’ll give them some philosophy on why I don’t want to do it or why it’s a rumor. But most times now, I tend not to talk about it.”
Whether this counts as lazy journalism is really up to you to decide.
The James Bond Franchise Will Continue to Evolve
While details surrounding who may next portray James Bond remain a mystery, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have now revealed some details regarding how they plan to approach the next stage of the franchise. The Daniel Craig era reinvented the 007 series in several ways, with each movie being a more straight-up sequel to what came before, as well as opening up the character’s dark, emotional side. According to Broccoli, the world of James Bond will continue to reinvent itself with the next actor and next movie, bringing something new to the long-running franchise.
“That’s why, when people go, ‘Oh, who are you going to get?’ it’s not just about casting an actor for a film,” she explained. “It’s about a reinvention, and ‘Where are we taking it? What do we want to do with the character?’ And then, once we figure that out, who’s the right person for that particular reinvention?”
Since Daniel Craig departed the role, there have been several suggestions regarding how James Bond could be reinvented. While Broccoli has since stated that certain elements will remain the same, she has revealed that the character will continue to evolve for the modern world. “It’s an evolution. Bond is evolving just as men are evolving,” she said. I don’t know who’s evolving at a faster pace.”
As for Idris Elba, the actor is plenty busy right now and can currently be seen in both the survival thriller Beast and the fantastical drama Three Thousand Years of Longing.
