Actor Antonio Banderas has revealed his reaction to seeing Harrison Ford don the hat and whip as iconic adventurer Indiana Jones in the upcoming sequel Indiana Jones 5. And it will no doubt echo the feelings of many Indiana Jones fans. Speaking with USA Today, Banderas detailed his first sighting of Ford back in character, revealing that it left him feeling somewhat star-struck.
“So unbelievable. The first day I arrived, I was in the makeup trailer, and I turned around and there he was in the full Indiana costume with the hat and the whip. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was there with him, too, and it was so cool. I still remember the first time I saw Indiana Jones in a theater and the crowd was crazy about it. I thought, ‘This is like going back to the old adventure (movies) in a completely different way.’ What I can tell you about my character is he’s not a bad guy. He’s a friend of Indiana. He’s not the biggest character in the movie, but I don’t care. I just like to be part of that.”
Currently, we do not know many details of who Antonio Banderas is playing in Indiana Jones 5, but it sounds like the actor had quite the life-changing experience making the sequel alongside Harrison Ford. The actor has now revealed some details regarding his role in Indiana Jones 5, explaining that he is a friend of Indiana (many had wondered whether he would be playing the villain of the piece).

Banderas also seemingly confirms that his role in the movie is not that substantial, but he really does not seem to care about that, revealing that he was delighted to simply be a part of the beloved franchise.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Has Called Indiana Jones 5 ‘Fantastic’
As well as revealing a little about his role in proceedings, Banderas says of the sequel, “This is like going back to the old adventure (movies) in a completely different way.” The actor is not the only member of the Indiana Jones 5 cast to tease the old-school feel inherent in the follow-up, with Mads Mikkelsen (who probably is playing the villain) saying that the movie oozes the “golden period of serials from the 1940s.”
“[Raiders of the Lost Ark] was one of my favorite films, and it just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s — and that’s in the fifth film as well,” Mikkelsen said. “They’re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic. It felt like a Spielberg film, though it’s obviously James making it with the same vision.”
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, meanwhile, has heaped praise on the vision of director James Mangold saying, “James Mangold has done an unbelievable job with Indy. And he and Harrison [Ford] have an incredible relationship and I think the fans are just going to love what he’s created. It’s fantastic.”
Directed by James Mangold, with a script co-written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, Indiana Jones 5 stars Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas. Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2023, following several delays.
