I Know What You Did Last Summer Series Star Opens Up on Show’s Cancelation

While the original feature film was able to garner two sequels, the television series adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer was not destined for a lengthy run. After the series premiered on Prime Video last year, it was announced in January that Amazon wouldn’t be moving forward with season 2. Reviews were mixed and it would seem that the series did not generate the interest with horror fans that Amazon had been hoping for with the reboot.

For the cast and crew working on the series, it was understandably disappointing that I Know What You Did Last Summer was canceled after just one season. In a new interview with Screen Rant, series star Brianne Tju opened up about her thoughts on the show’s brief run. She admits that it was a bummer as she had such a great time working on season 1 and had gotten pretty invested in her character. That they had even discussed potential storylines for season 2 made the cancelation sting just a bit more, but, ultimately, Tju is still satisfied with the one season that they have.

“I think when we heard the news, obviously it was disappointing, I had such an incredible time working with all those people. Also creating the character, as controversial as she may be in terms of her choices, she was very interesting and exciting and challenging to play. I really fell in love with her, so it was disappointing, but I’m glad that I feel like we had such a solid season and I got to experience working in Hawaii with all of those people. I remember hearing something about potentially we would have been able to dive a little bit more into the cult in another season, but I’m happy with the way the first season ended. I’m happy with the way it came out and I’m very proud of that show.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer Was Rebooted In the Era of Remakes

Prime Video

Like the feature film, I Know What You Did Last Summer is based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan. Sara Goodman served as the series showrunner, and along with Tju, the show starred Madison Iseman, Bill Heck, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck, and Brooke Blum.

What likely influenced Amazon in taking a chance on the series is how other popular horror licenses from the past have had success with reboots and revivals. In 2018, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures made the wise choice of bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis for another battle with Michael Myers, as their new Halloween film smashed box office records to become one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. There was also a lot of fan interest in horror fans in the new Scream movie which was released in theaters this year. But perhaps there’s just no room in today’s world for an I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series.

You can watch the first and only season of I Know What You Did Last Summer streaming on Prime Video.
