Hugh Jackman Teases Wolverine Return While Wishing Deadpool 3 Co-Star Ryan Reynolds Happy Birthday

Logan star Hugh Jackman has teased his upcoming return as beloved X-Men member Wolverine while wishing his Deadpool 3 co-star Ryan Reynolds a happy birthday. Jackman took to social media to show off his singing skills, with the actor serenading a pair of portraits of Reynolds before signing off with one of Wolverine’s most iconic lines: “I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn’t very nice.”

Hugh Jackman’s crowd-pleasing return as Wolverine was revealed last month, and rather suddenly, with Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds sharing a video on his Twitter account. “Hey, everyone. We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we have been working extremely hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now,” Reynolds began. After calling Deadpool 3 “an incredible challenge that has formed me to reach down deep inside,” Reynolds adds that he has “…nothing. Yeah. Completely up here. And Terrifying. But, we did have one idea.”

Jackman, who it was believed had hung up the claws following the critically acclaimed Logan back in 2017, then appears in the background. Reynolds asks, “Hey Hugh. You wanna play Wolverine one more time?” And Jackman responds with a casual, “Yeah, sure Ryan.”

The pair have since appeared together to answer some burning questions. “You have questions,” Reynolds begins. “Yes. I had a lot of questions,” Jackman adds. “But rest assured, were going to answer them right now.” Jackman then asks, “Like for example, how is Wolverine alive after Logan?”

To a chorus of sighs of relief, Reynolds responds by saying, “Logan takes place in 2029. Totally separate thing. Logan died in Logan. Not touching that.” Following a casual battle between Reynolds and Jackman, which no doubt enacts some of what we will see in Deadpool 3, the actors end the clip with Jackman saying, “Love you, Kevin Feige. Thank you, MCU.”

Deadpool 3 is Expected to Follow Wade & Logan Heading Off on a Road Trip

While details of Deadpool 3 remain under wraps, it now seems to be a foregone conclusion that the sequel will follow Wade Wilson and Logan as they embark on a road trip. This storyline is something that Reynolds teased back when the Disney/Fox merger was finalized, with the actor revealing that the plan for Deadpool 3 was to center on “a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style.”

Bringing Deadpool and Wolverine together on the big screen (and no, X-Men Origins: Wolverine does not count) is something that Reynolds has wanted to see happen for some time. Now that it is, the actor could not help but declare his excitement. “I couldn’t be more excited. I mean, especially to do it this way,” he said. “Ultimately, I get to work with some of my closest friends in the world and that doesn’t happen every day working in this business.”

Directed by Shawn Levy, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 recently suffered a release date delay and is now scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
