Heartstopper, Doctor Who Star Yasmin Finney Wants to be First Openly Trans Bond Girl

Star of Netflix’s Heartstopper and recent addition to the Doctor Who cast Yasmin Finney has her eyes set on another role: Bond girl. In an interview with the Daily Star, Finney expressed interest in being the first openly transgender Bond girl.

“I love James Bond films. Every film I’ve seen, I’ve always thought, ‘I’d love to be that cool, sexy Bond girl,'” Finney, who’s best known for her role as Elle Argent in Heartstopper, said on Sunday.

“It has never been done before, so it would be amazing to do it,” she added, noting that she was inspired by trans model Caroline Cossey, who appeared as an extra in the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only. However, it wasn’t publicly known at the time that Cossey was transgender; she was outed in a newspaper following the film’s release. “She has inspired me in a way to be the positive representation that James Bond never had,” she said of Cossey.

“It’s Made My Life”: Finney on Doctor Who Casting

Netflix

Being the first openly trans Bond girl wouldn’t be the first history-making move from the 18-year-old Finney. Earlier this year, it was announced that she would join the cast of BBC’s iconic, long-running series Doctor Who in 2023 as the first openly transgender actress to play the Doctor’s on-screen companion.

Finney follows in the footsteps of Bethany Black, the first openly transgender actress to be cast on Doctor Who as 474 in 2015, as well as Rebecca Root, who was the first transgender actress to play companion to the Doctor in the audio series Stranded.

“If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them,” Finney said of her casting on Doctor Who. “This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself [Russell T. Davies], has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get ready.”

Finney will star in Doctor Who alongside Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, who will play the 14th Doctor, beginning in 2023. It’s yet to be confirmed if (or how) Finney’s Rose is related to Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, a past beloved companion of the Doctor.

In the meantime, catch fan-favorite Finney as Elle in Heartstopper, streaming now on Netflix.
