Hayley Atwell Reveals Details of Her Role in Mission: Impossible 7

Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell will once again demonstrate her affinity for action, joining the likes of Tom Cruise in the upcoming sequel Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. While there is a lot of mystery surrounding both the plot of the action movie follow-up, and Hayley Atwell’s character, Grace, the actress has now revealed some insight into both while speaking at a Q&A at Awesome Con.

“She’s a joy to play. She’s mischievous, and she’s playful, and she holds her own with [Ethan] and there’s an element of, a kind of comic element to it, which is great, which we haven’t seen as much of in Mission before this, it has a different tone to it. And in terms of stunts, I learnt how to drift in a race car… Backflipped over a bridge, jumped off a– jumped backwards off a moving train, um, a lot of running uphill in high heels while handcuffed to Mr. Cruise. Um, that’s all I will say.”

Clearly, Atwell has been sworn to secrecy over the details of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Nevertheless, Atwell was able to offer at least some information regarding both her character and the movie, describing the former as “mischievous” and “playful” and the latter as having “a different tone.” Of course, what exactly these descriptions mean is open to interpretation. What isn’t, is that Atwell will be involved in more death-defying stunts when she makes her Mission: Impossible debut.

Is Hayley Atwell Playing a Hero or a Villain in Mission: Impossible 7?

Paramount Pictures

This being an installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, and thus filled with all the double-crossing and secret allegiances inherent therein, we still do not know whether Hayley Atwell’s character will be working with Tom Cruise, or against him.

According the Atwell, Grace’s loyalties are incredibly ambiguous. Even to her. “I’ve been living in an existential crisis since October, going ‘who am I? who am I?’ An actor in search of a character,” she said of her role previously. “There’s ambiguity…the interesting thing we’re exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in. How she starts off, where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up.”

One thing we do know about Grace is that she is Ethan Hunt’s equal, with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie describing the character as a “destructive force of nature.”

While we do not know too much about the plot of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, it has been revealed that this movie and it’s follow-up will wrap up the story of Tom Cruise’s unstoppable IMF Agent Ethan Hunt. The recent trailer teased the sheer action movie spectacle that will be on display, as Hunt must once again bring his team together to stop the end of the world.

Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Frederick Schmidt, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes.
