Hayden Christensen’s actual time on screen in Obi-Wan Kenobi may have been limited, but the actor revealed that to become Darth Vader again he had to pile on the pounds. Christensen last took on the role of Anakin Skywalker almost two decades ago, and returning to the iconic character saw the actor taking on a lot of work to building himself back into the part in both body and mind. In an interview with Fatherly, Christensen said:
“I think that process was very important for me. I needed to become that character again, physically. I just consumed as many calories as possible. I put on 25 or 30 pounds to fill out that [Darth Vader] suit.”
Despite the work that went into creating his Vader-body for the show, Christensen admitted that maintaining it after the shoot was another matter entirely, and it turned out to be one fight he couldn’t win. He added:

“I try to avoid the dad bod thing. And I was trying to maintain that Vader body after we finished. But, honestly, I pretty much just went back to my old diet. I kind of deflated after that.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi has seen record viewer numbers on Disney+, with fans finally getting to see Ewan McGregor as the titular Jedi as he came face to face with a “peak” Darth Vader for the first time since their battle on Mustafar at the end of Revenge of the Sith. The limited series directed by Deborah Chow comes to an end this week with its thrilling finale, and all eyes are now on whether there will be another season to follow considering the recent comments by Chow suggesting there “are more stories to tell” in the world of Kenobi.
Hayden Christensen Would Love A Darth Vader Series
Just a few years ago, there was an Obi-Wan Kenobi and potentially a Darth Vader movie on the cards, but following the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the future of Star Wars prequel movies collapsed on itself. With Kenobi now being given his shot in the Disney+ series, could there be a possible solo outing for Vader to come? Hayden Christensen would certainly be on board with that idea. He told The Hollywood Reporter:
“Absolutely. To get to do more with this character would be amazing!”
Hayden Christensen’s return as Vader has been one of those rare things that has been unanimously welcomed by Star Wars fans, but it was also a huge surprise when the announcement was originally made. In fact, it was so surprising that Christensen himself was shocked to have been asked back to the franchise. He previously said:
“It was definitely a surprise. You know, for the longest time, no, I didn’t think I’d be stepping back into this role again. But certainly, in the back of my head for a little bit, I was maybe hopeful that one day such an opportunity might present itself.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi will reach its conclusion this Wednesday when the season, and possibly series, finale premieres on Disney+.
