Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has teased the tone of the upcoming sequel, which is expected to bring this particular line-up of the titular team to an emotional end. And emotional it will be, with Gunn revealing to EW that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will endeavor to pull at our heartstrings far more than it will tickle our funny bones.
“Vol. 3 has a lot of the fun and the goofy stuff of Guardians, but it’s also incredibly emotional. It’s the end of the story for this group of Guardians, so there was a lot of emotion around it. It was very serious a lot of the time. The actors were all pushing themselves a lot, especially Chris Pratt. It was heavy.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will end James Gunn’s trilogy, a trilogy that first began back in 2014, with the filmmaker hoping to avoid the mistakes that often befall finales.
“I think I felt a lot of pressure before because it really matters to me that we end this story well. I’ll be honest, I started looking at all the trilogies that have existed throughout time, and in most trilogies, the third movie is awful. There’s a couple of exceptions, but when I say a couple, I mean like two or three. It’s very rare that the third movie in a franchise is good. So, it was important to me that we really ended this story in a good way.”
To do so, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will go back to the beginning, focusing on fan-favorite character Rocket Raccoon.
“A lot of Vol. 3 is going back to the beginning so that we can really see the end. We see the importance of Rocket’s character and who he is. It was just important to me that it worked and that I did everything I possibly could for the sake of these characters and for the fans. So, I put my all into it.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy Have Already Begun Saying Goodbye
The core cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy has already begun to bid their farewells to their Marvel counterparts and the franchise itself. Upon wrapping filming, Dave Bautista, who has played Drax since the first outing in 2014, took to social media to say, “Haven’t found the words yet. It ended so suddenly and I was on to my next film before I could process it all. End of a journey that changed my life.”

Director James Gunn meanwhile found it difficult to explain just how important to him the Guardians of the Galaxy have been. “It is somewhat simple to explain to others how much I love this cast & crew,” he said. “It is more difficult to explain how much I love these characters – that I see them as parts of myself & parts of those I love, & filming them, & writing their words, is a way of expressing that love. Again, I’ll still be working with them over the next year until release, but shooting that last shot was a reminder of the warm impermanence of life & love, & how that impermanence makes it so precious, so valuable, & is a good reason to be grateful for what I have right now.” Gunn will now be busy bringing the same love and attention to the world of DC.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will begin streaming on Disney+ from November 25.
