Girl You Know It’s True Image Reveals First Look at Milli Vanilli Biopic

The first photos of the Milli Vanilli biopic Girl You Know It’s True has been unveiled, via THR. In the film, Elan Ben Ali and Tijan Njie play Fabrice Morvan and Robert Pilatus, the duo who famously topped the charts in the 1980s under the name Milli Vanilli. Unfortunately, their accomplishments have since been overshadowed by controversy as the two were infamously outed as a phony band who lip-synced the singing of other artists. You can see the first look image of the two lead stars in their roles above.

The biopic comes from Leonine Studios and Wiedemann & Berg. Simon Verhoeven (Welcome to Germany) wrote the script. Also starring in the film is Matthias Schweighöfer (Army of Thieves) as producer Frank Farian, the mastermind behind Milli Vanilli, as well as Graham Rogers (Ray Donovan) as the duo’s assistant, Todd, and Bella Dayne (Humans) as Farian’s right-hand, Milli. Verhoeven is also producing with Farian and Stefan Gärtner.

The story of Milli Vanilli is a bit of a tragic one. Morvan and Pilatus had experienced what it was like to achieve great fame and success, going so far as to win a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1990 with millions of records sold. It all came to a screeching halt once it was revealed that the pair had been lip-syncing the whole time. After taking some time to reflect, the duo planned a comeback album to be released in 1998 featuring legitimate vocals from the singers. The album was canceled after Pilatus died of an overdose in Germany following stints in jail and rehab.

Also released is a first look image of Matthias Schweighöfer as Frank Farian. In the image, Schweighöfer sports long blonde hair as he sits next to a mixing board, no doubt putting together the music that would be released for Milli Vanilli. In a statement, Verhoeven said how compelling he finds the duo’s story to be and hopes to help set the record straight with the music biopic.

“Girl You Know It’s True is captivating on so many levels,” he said. “It not only tells the spectacular rise of two underdogs making it to the zenith of showbiz within one summer, it also gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of that illusory world of fame and its sometimes tragic and unscrupulous machinations. Personally, I think Rob and Fab did not deserve to become the sole scapegoats of this scandal.”

Girl You Know It’s True is currently in production with plans to wrap filming by December. The film does not currently have an official release date.
