If it’s up to Giancarlo Esposito to pick which character he gets to play if and when he makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, the Better Call Saul star would be playing the new Professor X. Ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, there had been rumors of Marvel casting announcements including word that Esposito would be the next Charles Xavier. Those rumors did not materialize, but they had generated a lot of discussion online with many fans sold on the potential casting.
As it turns out, Esposito has apparently had talks with Marvel, and while no casting for any particular character has been put into place at this time, the actor has revealed which roles he’s spoken with the company about. He mentions the popular Marvel supervillains Magneto and Doctor Doom, both of whom have long had many fans saying Esposito would be a fantastic choice for the role. In the TikTok video below, posted by @countdowncitygeeks, you can see Esposito then naming the leader of the X-Men as another potential character he could play.

“I have not worked for Marvel yet. I’ve been in a room with them and talked to them… So, there’s been talk of Magneto… Who else has there been talk about over there? Oh, Doom, Doctor Doom! And then there is… Professor X.”
Going by this response, it seems Esposito has had talks with Kevin Feige and Co. about some different possibilities, but they’re still trying to finalize which role would be the best fit for the actor. Esposito is asked to personally name a favorite of the three roles he’s up for, and because he wants to try something new, he goes with the hero.
“I’m going to go for something that is a little bit different. I’m going to go and put it out in the universe that it is Professor X.”
Giancarlo Esposito Is An Amazing Villain, Can He Be a Great Hero Too?
Many fans seem torn on the idea of Giancarlo Esposito in the Professor X role. As he is such a skilled actor, there are some fans who have the confidence he’d just as well pull off the role of Professor X and that it would be interesting seeing him playing a character different from most of his other recent roles. Meanwhile, other fans say it may be too hard to separate Esposito from that villainous persona, arguing that he’d be better off as Magneto or Doctor Doom.
For now, Esposito is preparing to say goodbye to one of his most well-known villains. The final season of Better Call Saul has just two episodes left, and while Esposito has campaigned for his Gus Fring character to get his own spinoff series, there are no plans for that to happen at this time, leaving an opening in the actor’s schedule. Maybe that means it’s time to join the MCU, as Charles Xavier or perhaps another character, hero or villain.
