Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Will Take the Action Back to Manhattan

Details of the greenlit Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel have now been revealed, with the follow-up set to take the action back to Manhattan. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ghostbusters: Afterlife writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan unveiled the working title for the sequel, Firehouse, along with a few other details. Including the return of one of the original Ghostbusters crew.

“At the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ecto-1 is driving into Manhattan, returning to its home. And before anyone ever heard the title Afterlife, we called it Rust City. Which would not have made sense to anyone until they saw the movie. The code name for the next movie is ‘Firehouse.’”

Kenan went on to add that Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is now being written, with he and Jason Reitman taking just as much care as they did with its predecessor to make the sequel a worthy addition to the Ghostbusters legacy.

“We’re writing as quickly as we can. We had the story before we finished Afterlife. And we have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel.”

Directed by Jason Reitman and starring Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, Ghostbusters: Afterlife beamed into theaters towards the end of last year. Set thirty years after the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a family who move to a small town, where they discover their connection to the original ghost-busting team. When supernatural phenomena relating to New York City’s “Manhattan Crossrip of 1984” occur and threaten the world, the kids, along with their family and friends, must solve the decades-old mystery of the relocation of their grandfather and use the equipment of the Ghostbusters to become their successors and save us all.

Winston Zeddemore Will Feature Heavily in Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2

Sony Pictures Releasing

As well as taking the Spengler family back to Manhattan, the sequel will also see the return of Ernie Hudson as original Ghostbuster Winston Zeddemore. While the likes of Winston, Peter Venkman, and Ray Stantz feature in the finale of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Reitman revealed that Winston will heavily feature in the follow-up.

“The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters.”

Reitman went on to reveal that the ideas behind the sequel were discussed with the late, great Ivan Reitman, the filmmaker behind the original Ghostbusters.

“We talked about what we wanted to see happen to the Spengler family and even outside the Spengler family. And he was so excited. He was just thrilled about where we wanted to go. And sitting there, telling him what we wanted to do with the story was a daunting responsibility, but his enthusiasm for it is what fuels us today.”

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel was officially announced back in April. The outing earned $204.6 million worldwide, becoming the ninth -highest-grossing movie of 2021. It was well-received by critics, many of whom praised Jason Reitman’s direction, its nostalgic tone, and sense of fun and adventure.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is not the only offering from the beloved franchise on the horizon, with an animated movie recently announced to be in development.
