George R.R. Martin Says He Wants to Remain in Control of the Game of Thrones Franchise

Since the original novel, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996, four more books have been released, one TV series has started and finished, one spinoff prequel series is debuting next month, and several prequel novellas from the author have made their way to readers. The Game of Thrones franchise seems to be ever-expanding, even if the forthcoming novels The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring have yet to be published despite the fifth novel in the series releasing over a decade ago.

There is undoubtedly a ton of source material that stems from Martin’s head, and he wants to ensure that he stays in control of the immensely popular franchise. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin shared his thoughts on how big the franchise has become and where he fits into all of the madness.

“Sometimes I sit around trying to figure out who the hell I am in this whole scenario. Am I George Lucas? Am I Gene Roddenberry? Am I Stan Lee? How do I relate to this IP? Because those are three different stories as to where they wound up.”

When the author was asked which of those people he would want to be, he was adamant that it couldn’t be Stan Lee.

“I don’t know. Not Stan Lee at the end. He had no power, no influence. He wasn’t writing any stories. He couldn’t say, ‘Don’t do this character.’ He was just a friendly person they brought to conventions and who did cameos. To be sidelined on the world and characters that you created, that would be tough.”

Given Martin’s heavy involvement with the forthcoming House of the Dragon and his relationship with HBO, it seems, at least for now, that the pairing is working together harmoniously.

George R.R. Martin Still Appreciates the Expansiveness of Marvel

Despite his thoughts regarding Stan Lee’s role within the MCU, the author still appreciates what Disney and Keven Feige did with the source material. In fact, Martin always has dreamt of allowing his creation to spread its wings, traveling to various entertainment mediums.

“The MCU has The Avengers, but they also have something offbeat like WandaVision. That’s what I hope we can do with these other Game of Thrones shows, so we can have a variety that showcases the history of this world. There are only so many times you can do a competition for the Iron Throne.”

We will get our first taste of something different with the imminent release of House of the Dragon, releasing next month on Aug. 21st.
