Furiosa Set Photos Reveal First Look at Anya Taylor-Joy in Mad Max Prequel

Set photos continue to emerge from George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa and have finally provided the first look at Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the titular character. Charlize Theron played Furiosa in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, with Tom Hardy playing the franchise protagonist Max Rockatansky.

Unfortunately, neither of the two will be reprising their roles in Furiosa since Miller decided to go in a different direction for the film. Instead, fans will get to see Chris Hemsworth as young Immortan Joe, the main villain of Fury Road, and he looks completely unrecognizable as the character.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Previously leaked set images showed Hemsworth sporting a glorious red beard and long locks, unlike the hideously disfigured and masked Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road. British actor Tom Burke, who replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is reportedly playing Furiosa’s second antagonist, Dr. Dementus, leader of a great biker horde.

Anya Taylor-Joy, on the other hand, also looks quite different than Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, as her most distinctive feature, the buzz cut, is missing. However, Taylor-Joy does appear to have the severed hand. You can check out the Furiosa set pics below.

The shaved head look of Imperator Furiosa was of Theron’s own making, and once George Miller saw it, he instantly knew it was going to be iconic. But the director had other plans for Furiosa. As per the film’s costume designer Jenny Beavan, Taylor-Joy also wished to shave her head, but Miller refused, and here we are, looking at Taylor-Joy rocking a head full of hair and no eye shadow. In any case, the Peaky Blinders star is excited to be a part of the Mad Max franchise and has teased an intense performance as Furiosa.

“I’m just so excited [to play Furiosa]. I know that whatever person I will be at the end of it will be remarkably different than the person I am now and I’m excited for that kind of growth. I think you only really get that growth through challenging yourself intensely and I can’t imagine a better role, a better director and a better story to do that for. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Furiosa Promises to Be an Epic Mad Max: Fury Road Follow Up

Furiosa is currently filming in George Miller and Chris Hemsworth’s backyard—Australia, where it has already spent north of $200 million on production. Furiosa is set to be Australia’s biggest film shoot ever, and as such, the government awarded the filmmakers with tax incentives in return for all the thousands of jobs the film would create. And the leaked images indicate the money is well spent. George Miller has also promised that Furiosa will be an epic, multi-year spanning saga, unlike Mad Max: Fury Road, which is just a long chase movie that takes place over three days.

Furiosa is expected to film throughout this year and will arrive in theaters on May 24, 2024. It’s a long wait, yes. But Furiosa is worth waiting for, especially if it turns out to be even remotely like Mad Max: Fury Road, arguably the greatest action movie of the decade.

Read the plot synopsis for Furiosa below:

“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”
