Fast X Star Ludacris Teases Twists, Turns & Surprises

Somehow, the Fast and Furious franchise has reached ten outings, and while many of them play the same beats, returning star Ludacris has declared that audiences will be “very surprised” by what Fast X has in store. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Ludacris addressed the difficult task of going further and faster with each installment, teasing the twists, turns, and new characters that Fast X will bring.

“Every single movie I am thinking… ‘How can we [top this]? How can you top space?’ Like, come on, man. There’s some twists. There’s more turns. There’s even more characters being introduced that are going to blow your mind… There’s a lot of takeaways from the next one. It comes out next year.”

Not much has yet been revealed regarding the direction of Fast X, but we know that it will add action star Jason Momoa to the fray. But rather than joining Dom and his family, Momoa will be set against them as the movie’s villain. So, expect a lot of twists, turns, and surprises where Momoa’s character is concerned.

Aside from Momoa‘s role, the only other thing we know about Fast X is that there has been more behind-the-scenes drama than anyone expected. After just a week or so of filming, director Justin Lin walked away from the project. The filmmaker’s decision reportedly came as a result of an argument with star Vin Diesel, who has, of course, put others off of returning to the Fast and Furious franchise. Fast X will now be directed by Louis Leterrier, who is best known for The Incredible Hulk, the Transporter series, Clash of the Titans, and Now You See Me.

Despite this dramatic fallout, Ludacris assures fans that the rest of the cast is just one happy family. “The Fast family is truly like a real family offscreen,” Ludacris said of working on the Fast and Furious franchise. “We are the luckiest cast in the entire world. Trust me, most movies when they yell cut, everybody goes their separate ways. Our kids know each other. They’re like best friends… Our kids love it so much ’cause they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s Uncle Vin. Oh, that’s Uncle Tyrese.’ They really call them uncle… it’s the best thing in the world.”

Fast X Will Take the Excessive Franchise Back to its Roots

Universal Pictures

Now that Dom and his family have literally gone into outer space, it’s easy to forget that the…excessive franchise had a much humbler beginning. Starting life as a semi-remake of Point Break, the first The Fast and the Furious finds Paul Walker’s FBI Agent attempting to infiltrate and capture Dom and his gang, who are merely stealing DVD players and the like from trucks.

Since the gang began saving the world from total destruction over and over and over again, fans have wondered whether Fast and Furious will ever return to these simpler times. Well, according to Tyrese Gibson, Fast X will indeed take the action franchise back to its roots — which could be just one of the surprises now teased by Ludacris. “The fans have been wanting over the years for us to get back to the roots of what we know and love about Fast,” Gibson said of Fast X. “We’ve heard you. And we’re doing it.”

Starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Michael Rooker, Scott Eastwood, and Charlize Theron, Jason Momoa, Rita Moreno, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, and Brie Larson, Fast X is scheduled to be released on May 19, 2023, by Universal Pictures.
