1-800-HOT-NITE Takes Inspiration from Nick Richey’s Childhood

“I always wanted to be a man,” Richey said of the inspiration behind the film’s story. “Growing up in Section 8 housing it didn’t pay to be young, weak or vulnerable. So, by the age of 13 I was getting arrested for malicious mischief. I was jacking Mickeys 22’s from 7-Eleven and fighting with any boy mean – muggin’ on my block. I wanted to be a man so I emulated the men in my life. I tried to be hard like them… But I was a lost cause.”

He added, “I couldn’t push back tears when my mom and dad fought. When my best friend pounded my face and broke my arm in a fight, I felt heartbreak instead of anger. I was emotional. I was vulnerable. 1-800-HOT-NITE explores the vulnerabilities of boys like me on the precipice of adulthood… boys on the brink of being ripped from their youth. This is an audacious coming-of-age drama that stretches, bends, and breaks the bonds of love, friendship, and family over the course of one night.”
