Early Secret Invasion Synopsis Hint At A Crossover Event Series

Secret Invasion will be the first television production of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five. The series was first announced in December 2020 and will be based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. Secret Invasion will feature Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and his decoy replacement in S.H.I.E.L.D., Ben Mendelsohn’s Skrull leader Talos in lead roles.

The series details are primarily under wraps as of now, but recently, a synopsis on Disney’s official Disney Plus Originals website has hinted that Secret Invasion would be a crossover series.

The synopsis reads:

Secret Invasion is a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos. Both the characters first met in Captain Marvel. The cross-over event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

As part of the MCU’s shared continuity, Secret Invasion is undoubtedly a crossover series as it will factor in the other projects of the franchise. The series will pick up from two cliffhanger post-credits sequences – one from Spider-Man: Far From Home and the other from WandaVision. The two sequences showed how Nick Fury has been in deep space for many years and is closely working with shape-shifting Skrulls to establish a strong defense against hostile forces that may attack Earth. The series may also factor in the upcoming MCU sequel, The Marvels.

The show also mixes up the crossing-over characters from other MCU projects, solidifying its interconnection to the future Phases. Secret Invasion will see the return of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Martin Freeman as Agent Everett Ross, and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine. Agent Ross has close ties to stories centered around Wakanda. Armor Wars featuring War Machine is a separate series that may bridge the character’s arc after Endgame.

Also starring in the show are Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Killian Scott, Carmen Ejogo, and Ali Selim. The show, teased as a “darker thriller laced with paranoia,” will stream on Disney+ in 2023.

Will Secret Invasion Be a Bigger Crossover?

The comic book series of Secret Invasion storyline is a true crossover event. In the comics, we see Fantastic Four’s Baxter Building transferred to the Negative Zone, a byline that the show could use to introduce Marvel’s first family in the Phase Six film Fantastic Four (2024). The comics also feature Black Bolt, Namor, Doctor Strange, Professor X, and Mister Fantastic in a crucial role as they team up to confront Skrulls. The team is what makes up the secret Illuminati, first featured in MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Furthermore, the characters that form Thunderbolts are also crucial to the storyline. Marvel Studios already have a Thunderbolts movie in production.

Secret Invasion is just a six-episode event, so it’s practically very complex to add these many elements into the story. Moreover, Marvel just derives aspects from the comics and anchors their stories differently. In the series, it would be Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury taking charge, returning to his home planet after avoiding his role in Earth-based operations for years. So, it’s most likely that Secret Invasion will be a buddy adventure with Fury and Talos taking on the enemy.

Secret Invasion will be an important story in the MCU that will pave the path for the introduction of several new characters, including the X-Men team of mutants. How that will take shape within Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe will be a unique experience.
