Prominent pop culture franchises like Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Extended Universe, and Star Wars are signing big names in crucial roles as these franchises get bigger with more installments. In the past two years, actors like Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, John Krasinski, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, and Mahershala Ali have been cast in several distinct projects set in these franchises. The new announcements also spin rumors and fan cast expectations that keep the media excited regarding such productions.
The latest actor to gain popularity for casting rumors is Dylan O’Brien. The actor, famous for his portrayals in the series Teen Wolf and the adventure-thriller trilogy The Maze Runner, is being eyed by fans to take over the role of DC Comics superhero Dick Grayson.
Dick Grayson is the first person to take on the persona of Robin in the comics, training right under Batman. He becomes the vigilante Nightwing and leaves Batman’s team of aides. Fans wish Dylan O’Brien to play the Nightwing persona in live-action.
Recently, in an interview with The Playlist’s The Discourse Podcast, O’Brien reacted to these fan campaigns and said he is open to taking these roles depending on the context. He said:
I don’t actually rule out anything, so it’s not like I wouldn’t entertain it if something came my way and if it was like with a really talented filmmaker that I was desperate to work with and if it was a really cool take on the part.
He added that he is currently more inclined toward experimental character roles with distinct challenges. However, he is not closed to anything from these projects if anything comes his way.
I do lean towards wanting to find these sort of smaller character roles for myself. Just because, truly, it had been a long time and I hadn’t gotten many chances to do that, so it’s just like, I think just for now at least, more fulfilling to be experimenting like that and challenging myself in that way… I’m definitely not closed off to anything.
Dylan O’Brien in Batgirl — Is it Possible?
The updates on Batgirl have been very bleak in the past few months. Earlier this year, Leslie Grace revealed her first look in the costume. There were also a few updates on J.K. Simmons’ portrayal as Commissioner Gordon and Michael Keaton’s appearance in the movie. But, as of now, no release date or further updates have made the news recently.
According to DCEU’s lore, there is a slight confusion over Dick Grayson’s presence in that universe. The movie Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice revealed that the Joker had murdered Robin. Fans speculated that the deceased Robin is Jason Todd; however, Zack Snyder’s Justice League told that it was Dick Grayson who Joker murdered.
Now, it’s a bit confusing if Warner Bros. and DC Films are addressing Snyder’s story arc as canon or have decided to go on a different route. The confusion with the timeline of events in the franchise puts DCEU’s Dick Grayson in a gray area, making his appearance in the upcoming Batgirl film highly unlikely.
Dylan O’Brien has recently starred in a supporting role in Quinn Shephard’s Not Okay and is filming for M. Night Shyamalan’s next, The Vanishings at Caddo Lake. Though he can’t be in Batgirl, his career experience and performance in recent films like Infinite and Love and Monsters make him a right fit for a superhero role. Maybe, not so long from now, the fan campaigns will land him one of their favorite franchises.
