Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Hits Disney+ This Month

After an impressive theatrical dominance, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness heads to the small screen this month. Disney has officially announced that the Doctor Strange sequel, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular sorcerer, is coming to Disney+ on June 22, 2022. Though the film continues to collect profits in theaters, Disney is not wasting too much time with letting fans at home stream the hit movie as well.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness officially premiered in theaters on May 6. The film currently stands as the highest-grossing movie of 2022 with more than $879 million pulled in at the worldwide box office. It had also garnered $90 million on opening day alone in North America, putting it at the second-best opening of the pandemic era just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Sam Raimi directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness using a screenplay by Michael Waldron. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachael McAdams. Also included is the Illuminati which includes the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X, which has been confirmed in the marketing leading up to the release of the feature film.

Will Doctor Strange 3 Happen?

As of now, Marvel has not officially announced a third Doctor Strange movie. Given the immense success of In the Multiverse of Madness, however, the odds are we have not seen the last of this character. Benedict Cumberbatch has also teased more of a future as Doctor Strange, as he’s not quite ready to leave the MCU behind yet either. With the right ingredients there, perhaps another film, or even a Disney+ follow-up series, is inevitable.

“I really can’t wait to see what the fan reaction is to this and where it takes Strange, and who he is by the end of the film. But I think it sets him up for a really exciting future,” Cumberbatch told Extra TV. “I’m not tired of it all yet. I really enjoy playing this character, and I’ve still got a lot left to give as him, and a lot more adventures I want to have with him.”

Sam Raimi is not committed to another Marvel movie at this time, but the director has publicly praised Marvel Studios and seems to have had a very positive experience with returning to the fold. That makes it possible he’d be up for doing a third Doctor Strange movie. Scott Derrickson, the director of the first Doctor Strange, has also suggested he’d be up to return to direct a potential third movie, even if things didn’t work out with him and the second film. In any case, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still playing in some movie theaters and you will be able to catch the film streaming when it premieres on Disney+ on June 22, 2022.
