When Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrived in cinemas in May, there were plenty of moments that fans called out as being a little too cliché. While the touch of Sam Raimi was definitely on the movie, including on its extreme-zoom ending with Strange’s third eye opening in a moment that could have cut straight from Raimi’s Evil Dead movie endings. However, it seems that there was another possible ending discussed, which would have been possibly too much of a cheesy moment for even Raimi to pull off, and according to writer Michael Waldron, it involved a nod to Michael Jackson’s Thriller and could have included the iconic laugh of Vincent Price.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a resounding success at the box office. Having fallen just short of $1 billion worldwide, even the mixed reviews couldn’t hurt the movie, and it has now set the challenge for Thor: Love and Thunder to take up the reins in July and continue Marvel’s box office dominance. It seems that while the movie’s ending, which saw Strange feeling the consequences of having used the Darkhold to dreamwalk into the corpse of one of his alternate multiversal selves, there was another plan that would have involved a final reveal which is almost too cringe-worthy to consider ever being a reality.
During the audio commentary on Doctor Strange 2, Waldron explains that the ending used was not the only ending that they had in mind. He revealed that one possibility would have mimicked the end of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video and would have seen the real Stephen Strange getting “trapped in that [incursion] universe…and then [Sinister Strange] turns around and the third eye opens.” That the scene could have been followed by the laugh of Vincent Price, as is the case in the horror-inspired video of Jackson’s huge hit. Whether this would have been just a step too far for the movie, is something that we will thankfully never know.
Benedict Cumberbatch is Ready For More Doctor Strange
It is no secret that Doctor Strange will return, and while you would think that Benedict Cumberbatch could be ready for a break from the Marvel sorcerer, it seems like he is more than ready to get back in the saddle again. He recently said:
“I would love to do another one. Doctor Strange is such a complex character and it feels like there is so much more to explore with him. He is such a brilliant character and I’m still having a wild time playing him. This multiversal narrative structure or idea is like it is in our own lives. We play multiple roles. We have an incredible capacity and imaginative space in our subconscious to imagine ourselves into different circumstances in our dreamscape, and I feel that this is an extrapolation of that in the sense that he’s meeting other versions who are essentially him, but they’ve made different choices in different circumstances with different outcomes. So, it’s a great fuel from a very odd spectacular self-therapy.”
