David Harbour Offers a Stranger Things Season 5 Update & Talks Hopper’s Fate

David Harbour will reprise the role of Jim Hopper for the upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things, and the actor has now offered an update on the series’ final outing. Hopper had quite the adventure in the fourth season, battling monsters from the Upside Down with swords, escaping a Russian prison, and finally kissing Winona Ryder’s character, Joyce. So what does Stranger Things Season 5 have in store for our intrepid hero?

“I have some idea of shape and structure, and what the overall thing is, but I don’t have a lot of specifics yet. I’m very trusting of the way [the Duffer Brothers] go about it. I have my ideas each season about what I would like to see him go through – I send them an email – and often they’re very responsive to that. But I haven’t got a full script yet for Episode 1.”

Speaking with Total Film, Harbour may currently be short on details for Stranger Things Season 5, but he trusts the creators to do what’s best. As for Harbour’s ideas, he feels that, after everything he’s been through, Hopper deserves a peaceful ending.

“It’s funny. I believe in a fundamental morality in storytelling, and that characters should get what they deserve. Which is more complex than just smiles. But I certainly think that Hopper is someone who’s been through a lot. I think he deserves peace, so I’d like to see that achieved. But the real question you have to ask yourself is: are the Duffers Dickensian? Or are they Kafka-esque? Do they believe in the big turkey dinner at the end of A Christmas Carol? I wonder myself, you know? I’m very curious to see how it unfolds.”

David Harbour is Hoping for a Hopper Spinoff

Netflix

While Stranger Things Season 5 is expected to end David Harbour’s iteration of Hopper, the actor is hoping to see an early-year’s spinoff. Stranger Things spinoffs are already in development, and though we do not know any details as yet, Harbour already knows who he would like to see play a young Jim Hopper in a prequel series. After name-dropping Euphoria Jacob Elordi, Harbour added, “”At this point, I think Hopper is a character that can exist independent of me. If they wanna go back in time, forward in time… I’d love to see another actor play Hopper and see what they can bring to it.”

For now, Stranger Things fans have the fifth and final season to look forward to, which promises to bring back the all-powerful Vecna while putting the focus on Will Byers. “Will’s going to be a big part and focus, is really all I can say of Season 5, in his journey,” Matt Duffer revealed. “We’re starting to see his coming of age, really. Which has been challenging for a number of reasons, some of which are supernatural. But you’re starting to see him come into his own.”

Starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Matthew Modine and Paul Reiser, the first four seasons of Stranger Things are now available on Netflix.
