Try to imagine a Kanye West biopic approved by the mogul with Danny McBride in the role, because it’s something that was apparently discussed by in real life by the two. While West is one of the most famous celebrities on the planet, he has not yet had the biopic treatment with an actor bringing his life story to the big screen. Fans could probably debate who might be best suited to play West, but odds are McBride’s name wouldn’t come up very often.
Be that as it may, McBride says it was he who was approached by West about possibly starring in a Kanye movie. The revelation came up during a recent roundtable discussion hosted by THR featuring McBride, Bowen Yang, Jake Johnson, Jerrod Carmichael, Michael Che, and Will Forte. McBride said that West personally approached him about starring in a potential biopic, and while the film never got any traction, West went so far as to visit McBride’s home to further discuss his pitch. As McBride explains:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“One time, I did get a phone call from Kanye West, and, this is real, he came to my house in South Carolina and wanted me to play him in a movie… He flew down to South Carolina, and I took him out in a boat for the day, and he said that he wanted… me to do a movie of his life, and he wanted me to play him… It was one of the most incredible days ever; it was pretty awesome.”
McBride did not offer further details about what exactly West had in mind for the biopic and didn’t expand when Yang pondered if the film would be similar to the Todd Haynes film I’m Not There, which features multiple actors playing legendary singer Bob Dylan. In any case, McBride playing West in a movie would certainly capture the attention of many. While hearing out the pitch was clearly an interesting experience for McBride, the film seems to have since puttered out in development hell, though it seems inevitable that a scripted biopic about West will be made one day.
Kanye’s Story Has Been Covered in a Netflix Documentary
Meanwhile, West has brought his story to the small screen with his own Netflix docuseries. Directed by Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, the doc, dubbed jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, chronicles West’s rise as a rapper, producer, and fashion designer. It premiered on Netflix in February and garnered mostly positive reviews. The filmmakers have suggested that West wanted to be very heavily involved with the project to the point where he was eventually told to back off, and he ultimately acquiesced.
“When it came down to making it, I had to let him know to make this film authentic, he had to step back,” Simmons told THR. “I had to take control of this narrative that God created — we didn’t create this. And he said he trusted I would do a good job on it.”
