Dakota Johnson Reflects on Awkward Ellen Moment Going Viral

One occasion that you will often see in those online lists compiling the most awkward moments that have happened on television is Dakota Johnson calling out Ellen DeGeneres over a missed birthday party. In 2019, Johnson appeared as a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when the two touched on a recent birthday party held by Johnson. DeGeneres asked how the party was before quipping that she “wasn’t invited,” and this had Johnson clarify that she had in fact invited DeGeneres, creating an awkward moment.

“Actually, no. That’s not the truth, Ellen. You were invited,” Johnson said. “Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of sh*t about not inviting you, but then I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited… I didn’t even know you liked me.”

“Well, of course I like you. You knew I liked you,” DeGeneres responded. “You’ve been on the show many times, and don’t I show like?”

Johnson fired back, “But I did invite you, and you didn’t come, so.”

DeGeneres then questions Johnson about whether she really did invite her, and Johnson insists that she definitely had. After first joking that she couldn’t come because she “had that thing” to do instead, DeGeneres finally admits that she does remember getting invited, claiming that she didn’t happen to remember that until right then. The lines were a bit blurred as to how much of the exchange had been jokes, but it was nevertheless a bit uncomfortable.

Dakota Johnson Is Perplexed By the Moment Going Viral

For whatever reason, people online had really taken to that birthday party moment from Ellen, and it went viral on social media. Countless memes had been shared of the interaction, and as “toxic workplace” controversy later began to envelope Ellen, the footage would go viral again with Johnson earning praise for standing up to DeGeneres. While an internal investigation concluded that DeGeneres had done no wrong, rumors persisted that she was often unkind to certain people behind the scenes, according to other actors like Brad Garrett and Lea Thompson.

In any case, the viral moment has made its place in meme history. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson was asked about the situation and how she feels about all of the memes. She confesses that she’s mostly unaware of them as she is not personally on social media. However, even she cannot completely escape them, as filmmaker Spike Jonze had just recently seen her an image of someone wearing a printed image of Johnson the meme on a T-shirt. As Johnson said:

“I’m not aware of them. I don’t know, these things happen, and then a year later somebody is asking me about it. Actually, the other day, Spike Jonze sent me a picture of a woman who works with him wearing a T-shirt of something I said with a drawing of me on it. I was like, ‘What?’ Because I’m not really on social media. I don’t see these things, so, to me, it’s just f***ing bizarre. Sorry, it’s bizarre.”

Fans can catch Dakota Johnson in her next film Persuasion when it is released on Netflix on July 15, 2022.
