City on a Hill, a riveting, thrilling crime drama, is the brainchild of Chuck MacLean that found a home on Showtime in 2019. From its inception, its ideations drew comparisons to The Wire, considered one of the best television shows ever made, in terms of grit and authenticity. In addition, the cast and team of talented producers added an extra level of support, underlining City on a Hill’s probability for success.
Executive producers on the project included Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Kevin Bacon, which drew great attention. And in addition, City on a Hill has a stellar cast comprised of Kevin Bacon, Aldis Hodge, Matthew Del Negro, Jill Hennessy, and Lauren E. Banks, tasked with driving the drama home. As far as fulfillment of high hopes, the numbers speak for themselves. According to a 2019 article on Yahoo, the series averaged 3.5 million viewers per episode. So, it was no surprise that the series was renewed for a season 2 before the finale.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
City on Hill is set in Boston in 1990 and delves into the dark, seedy underbelly of city politics and criminal justice. While it is a fictional account, there is much fact to this fiction as it finds its basis in true-to-life accounts. It soars as a hard-hitting commentary on the more undesirable elements of the FBI, Boston PD, and the District Attorney’s office. The series capitalizes on the ugliness arising in the tango for justice and self-preservation.
City on a Hill was structured as a mainstay solidified by its compelling plot. Aldis Hodge (ADA DeCourcy Ward) and Kevin Bacon’s (Jackie Rohr) synergy elevated the consistent intensification of a storyline centered on a young attorney’s dreams and the obstacles standing in his way. With sights set on fulfilling his ideals, ADA DeCourcy takes a high-stakes case. However, the chips were stacked against him. Unfortunately, DeCourcy’s hopes of securing his desired outcome rode on his cooperation with wily FBI agent Rohr. Rohr is the furthest thing from an idealist. Sadly, attempts to play the situation to his advantage get DeCourcy more than a little dirty. DeCourcy makes a deal with the devil and a few of his demons, and the price is quite costly. So, while he wins the battle, he loses the war.
City on a Hill Season 2: Where It Left Off
The primary characters returned for another scintillating season. Again, Jackie held to character, never too far from corruption. However, in the returning season, Rohr walks precariously on a razor-thin line over the stormy waters of his creation. Each move takes him closer to being taken under. The power struggle between him and DeCourcy continues, with each using their position to take the other down a peg. However, for Ward, the building tension threatens a lot more than his career.
Like season one, season two brought out the grittiest of Boston. By season’s end, it was definitive that the agencies, departments, and officers flowed in and out of grey areas neither fully upright nor evil, an apt reflection of the criminals they sought. With a massive following and solid plot, City on a Hill was a compelling piece not to be missed. So, the series was renewed for a third season.
Season Three: The Plot
After season two, it seemed as if Jackie Rohr was out for the count. Maybe one of the most corrupt agents in Boston had finally given it all up. However, the season three plot tells a different story. As it is written in the synopsis, circumstances will lead Rohr to a change of heart. And so it is; the FBI agent people love to hate is back in the saddle. Unsurprisingly, there is a lot more he will need to do to ensure some skeletons stay buried.
As Collider notes:
“Jackie Rohr (Bacon) lands a lavish new gig running security for a wealthy family. Life is good until secrets begin to unravel. “
Season 3: The Cast
There is good news for those who believe a well-run ship can’t continue its course without a veteran at the helm. The two titular characters will return. These two will not be the only ones to come back. Lauren E. Banks (Siobhan Quay) and Jill Hennessy (Jenny Rohr) are also returning. As an extra aside, the series will be getting a few new guest stars, Corbin Bernsen, Joanne Kelly, and Ernie Hudson, to fill out the roster. Through the interaction of this ensemble, fans will discover the corruption in Boston runs much deeper than was once thought.
Again, Collider notes:
“This season, our favorite duo is investigating a man so powerful and connected, he’s got the district attorney carrying out his orders.”
Nothing sounds more exciting.
A recently released season three trailer provides a little something to whet the appetite. And for the best news of all, In less than two weeks, fans can look forward to more crime and grime to up the ante a bit.
The hit series was renewed three months into its second season. City on a Hill is set to make its reprisal on July 31, 2022, on Showtime, adding an hour of oomph to Sunday nights. Like seasons one and two, three promises more grime.
