Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi Surprised That ‘Thor Will Return’

Warning: This article may contain spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder.

If there is one person you would expect to be involved in conversations about future Marvel sequels, it would be the actor playing the lead character or perhaps the director behind the latest installment. However, it seems that when it comes to a continuation of Thor’s Marvel adventures, neither Chris Hemsworth nor Taika Waititi knew anything about there being another Thor movie being considered. With the magic words “Thor Will Return” appearing after the second post-credit scene, it seems like no one has been more surprised by this than the people closest to the movie.

During an interview with Insider, Taika Waititi was about to be asked what his plans were now that it is clear Thor will be back, but he cut in to say, “Well, guess what? That was a surprise to me, too.” He then explained a little more about how he and Chris Hemsworth first found out about that end card when they watched the film in the theater. He said:

“I’m not joking. I saw it in the theater and I was like, “Oh, shit. Really?” Even Chris was like, “What?” But, of course he’ll be back. He’s the best character. I mean, I may be a little biased, but he’s the most fun to watch.

Now, I don’t know what would be next. I would definitely do one, but only if Chris did it. But it would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it. Like what would be the new take? The battles and all the fighting is fine, but I would want something that feels unexpected when it comes to the story. Like making just a $5 million movie with no fighting at all, just Thor on a road trip. Like “Nebraska.””

Thor 5 is Now A Real Possibility

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Last month, Taika Waititi seemed uncertain about the possibility of another Thor movie. When asked early on the promotion tour for Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi said:

“Who knows if we do another one after this but I definitely feel like we put everything, every idea and every single ridiculous concept or gag or stunt or character, into this film. I couldn’t be happier with it.”

Waititi has since gone on to say that he would only consider doing a fifth Thor movie if Chris Hemsworth is up for playing the role again, and it is therefore lucky that Hemsworth has already said that would love to be able to continue to explore Thor again. With so many negative reviews coming in for Thor: Love and Thunder, though, will Marvel be happy to give Waititi as much free rein as he seemed to have this time around?

Waititi has said on several occasions in the last month that he was stunned that Marvel Studios allowed him to go as “bonkers” as he did with Thor’s latest outing, so it might be that next time out, we see something a little more restrained. Then again, with the box office proving Thor is once again worthy, how his adventures may continue is anyone’s guess.
