Bridgerton Season 3: Plot, Cast, and Everything Else We Know

Bridgerton season 3 officially began filming, as Netflix announced through a behind-the-scenes video starring the show’s main cast, marking the start of a new stage starring Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) or Polin, as the fandom has known them since Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn was released. The first details of season 3 are beginning to be revealed, and here’s everything we know so far about Bridgerton season 3.

It’s important to remember that Bridgerton is a raucous and sharp romantic series about the timelessness of lasting friendships, families finding their place, and the search for one love that conquers all. The series, inspired by Julia Quinn’s bestsellers, tells a different love story in each season of a member of the Bridgerton family.

While season 1 told the story of Simon Basset and Daphne Bridgerton, season 2 focused on the love of Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton. Now it’s time to tell the story of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, although this is a change from the original order of the series if we take into account the books by Julia Quinn.

Bridgerton Season 3: The Plot

Along with the introduction video of the new season, Netflix released the synopsis for Bridgerton season 3. As expected, Polin’s love story will have a big twist in the new season compared to Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the book on which season 3 is based.

From Shondaland and new showrunner, Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts at the marriage mart fail spectacularly. Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly. Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope’s growing presence in the ton makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret.

Some questions and surprises are inferred from this synopsis. Unexpectedly, Penelope is actively looking for a husband. Perhaps, her mother became too insistent on that issue… or is it the only way Penelope finds to free herself from her family and continue her double life without so many watchful eyes on her?

As for Colin and Penelope, as the synopsis makes clear after she hears his cruel words, Penelope will give him the ice treatment and put some much-deserved distance between them. And Colin will suffer because of that distance…just like he should.

The only way Colin finds to get close to Penelope is to help her on her quest to find a husband, but those seduction lessons will backfire on Colin and will make him confront his true feelings for his friend, jealousy included. After all, Penelope is romancing Mister Bridgerton.

On the other hand, the schism between Eloise and Penelope, far from getting smaller, got bigger. Eloise will find a new friend in a place that nobody expects. Could it be Cressida? After all, apart from the Bridgerton family and Penelope’s sisters, she is the only lady of the same age as Eloise and Penelope, who had prominence in the previous seasons. And, if Eloise’s friend is Cressida, it will, undoubtedly, be another point of division in the fandom.

Penelope’s foray into the marriage market will put many more eyes on her, putting her double life in more jeopardy than ever. It will not be easy for her to keep her identity as Lady Whistledown a secret when, now, the eyes of the whole society will notice her.

Bridgerton Season 3: The Cast

Bridgerton season 3 will feature the main cast of the previous seasons. Nicola Coughlan will play Penelope Featherington, while Luke Newton will play Colin Bridgerton, the season’s main couple.

Also, the rest of the Featherington and Bridgerton family, along with Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury and Jessica Madsen as Cressida Cowper, will join a new season of the show. However, Regé-Jean Page is the only member of the main cast who is reluctant to return to Bridgerton, which makes plot continuity difficult in the family scenes featuring Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor).

After a small shock, since she didn’t appear in the presentation video of the season, Simone Ashley confirmed her presence in Bridgerton season 3 to return to life as Kathany Sharma alongside Jonathan Bailey, who also returns as Anthony Bridgerton. They were in charge of announcing their return, thus reassuring the fans through a post on their social media profiles. From what they both posted, fans can expect Kanthony, the couple formed by Kate and Anthony, to reunite again in Bridgerton season 3 to create more magic and romance.

However, the main cast is not the only one that will participate in Bridgerton season 3. The season also features Daniel Francis (known for Stay Close), who will play Marcus Anderson, a charismatic presence who lights up any room he enters, attracting the notice of certain matriarchs in the ton — and the ire of others.

Sam Phillips (The Crown) will play Lord Debling, a genial lord with unusual interests. But with wealth and a noble title to back up his eccentricities, he’ll have no shortage of interest from young ladies this season. Lastly, James Phoon (best known for his role in Wreck) will play Harry Dankworth, a little witty and intelligent man with a very good appearance.

The safest thing is that one of these gallants will be a suitor for Penelope, or maybe all three will be. The only thing that the synopsis makes clear is that Colin will feel jealous no matter what happens between Penelope and them, and that’s one of the things fans hope to see in season 3.

Release Date

After the success that Bridgerton brought to Netflix, there was no doubt that the streaming service would renew the show for many more seasons. Currently, the series has secured season four, according to Variety.

Regarding when season 3 will arrive, since filming has just officially begun, fans will have to wait to enjoy the new episodes. Taking this into account, it is not likely that the new batch of episodes will be ready for this year, not even at the end of it. So the most likely date for Bridgerton season 3 is in early 2023.
