Brendan Fraser Apologizes to San Francisco for George of the Jungle Filming Mishap

The Whale star Brendan Fraser is hoping the people of San Francisco will forgive him for an incident that occurred during the production of the 1997 movie George of the Jungle. Based on the original animated series, George of the Jungle stars Fraser as a primitive man raised by animals in the jungle. He is introduced to human society after he meets a woman named Ursula (Leslie Mann) who takes him home to San Francisco.

In the movie, there’s a scene where Fraser’s George dangles from the top of the city’s Bay Bridge to rescue a trapped parachutist. Speaking with SFGATE at the Mill Valley Film Festival, Fraser recalled how an incident during filming had caused a traffic jam, and now that he’s back in the city, he wants to offer a formal apology to San Francisco. While he mistakenly mentions the Golden Gate Bridge, the sentiment is the same. As Fraser explains:

“I have almost an apology to make. When we were doing George of the Jungle, George goes to rescue a parachutist tangled in the Golden Gate Bridge. That means Disney put a mannequin hanging by a parachute from the uprights. It brought traffic to a standstill on either side of the bridge. My trailer was on the other side in a parking lot. I just remember watching the Golden Gate Bridge. There’s this dummy parachutist hanging from it. I had the TV on, and Oprah got interrupted because there was a special news report with helicopters saying a parachute is dangling on the bridge. And I’m going — wait a minute, I’m looking at the helicopters and TV — somebody didn’t pull a permit, somebody’s going to get in trouble with the mayor’s office. So I can only apologize for that.”

Fraser then went on to repeat the story to the crowd ahead of The Whale’s screening. After his apology was met with laughter and applause, Fraser noted, “My bad, it won’t happen again.”

Brendan Fraser Does Something Different in The Whale

His role in The Whale is not at all like the character Brendan Fraser played in George of the Jungle. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Fraser as a 600-pound gay man named Charlie who’d abandoned his family to pursue a new life with his lover. After binge-eating away his depression has led to serious health problems, Charlie hopes to reconnect with his teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) before it’s too late.

The Whale has been met with great praise for Fraser with its early screenings, resulting in multiple standing ovations at film festivals. Some are saying that this could be the role that will get Fraser nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. There has been a certain level of criticism over the use of a fat suit for Fraser’s role, though it seems to be unanimous among the critics who’ve gotten to see the film that the actor puts on one of his most amazing performances yet with this movie.

The Whale will be released in theaters on Dec. 9, 2022.
