Following the recent, shocking cancelation of Batgirl, DC fans have been left to worry about the release of fellow superhero, Blue Beetle. Thankfully, courtesy of a report via The Hollywood Reporter, it looks like Blue Beetle, who is set to be played by Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña, is still on track to make his big screen debut next year.
“Insiders say Blue Beetle, starring Xolo Maridueña as DC’s first Latino superhero to topline a movie, is also on track for its August 2023 release date.”
Despite almost being completed, Batgirl starring Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton, will now seemingly never see the light of day after Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the DC outing will not be released in any format. The plan was to release Batgirl on HBO Max, but President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav recently revealed that these plans have changed, with the studio instead focusing on big screen ventures.

“Our ambition is to bring Warners back and to produce great high-quality films, and as we look at the opportunities that we have broadly, DC is one of the top of the list for us,” Zaslav explained. “You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman — these are brands that are known everywhere in the world. The ability to drive those all over the world with great story is a big opportunity for us. We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business. We’re going to focus.”
The cancelation of Batgirl surprised everyone, from fans, to fellow filmmakers and even to the cast and crew involved. Since then, DC fans have been left to wonder which other DC outings might face the ax, with Blue Beetle topping the list of major concern. The initial plan had been to release Blue Beetle to HBO Max similarly to Batgirl, but it looks like the decision to move the project into theaters may have saved it.
Blue Beetle Will Introduce Audiences to Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes
Netflix/Warner Bros. Studios
Blue Beetle will introduce Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes AKA Blue Beetle, an El Paso teenager who is grafted to the alien Blue Beetle scarab that gives him a super-powered exo-suit. While not much has yet been revealed about the plot of Blue Beetle, we do know that the movie will focus on Jaime Reyes, who is in fact the third person to take up the Blue Beetle mantle. Much like the Blue Beetles before him, Reyes gains his powers after discovering a “sacred scarab,” which attaches to his back and morphs into the black and blue battle suit allowing him to fight both street-level crime and embark on loftier missions in space.
All we have seen from Blue Beetle so far is a stunning piece of concept artwork and images from the set, both of which reveal an incredibly comic-book accurate suit for the character. Based on this alone, DC fans would surely feel robbed should Blue Beetle follow in the gloomy footsteps of Batgirl. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Blue Beetle stars Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, and Susan Sarandon alongside Xolo Maridueña as the titular DC superhero.
So, in order to once again assuage any worry, Blue Beetle is still scheduled to be released in the United States on August 18, 2023.
