Thanks to several photos from filming, we now have our first look at Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña superhero-suited up as DC hero Blue Beetle. Shared across social media, the images show the young actor with both mask on and mask off, with the black and blue costume cutting an impressively comic book accurate figure. Something which will no doubt look even better when in motion.
The look of Blue Beetle has been teased previously courtesy of some stunning concept art for the movie, and it certainly looks as though that vision has successfully made the leap into live-action. Further images tease an action sequence from Blue Beetle, during which the hero lands on, and destroys, an unsuspecting civilian’s car.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
While the suit already looks surprisingly majestic, it’s worth bearing in mind that comic book costumes often look worse when shown in natural lighting on set. So, considering that the suit already looks pretty impressive in these images, it is sure to look even better when it has been churned through the movie-magic machine.
While not much has yet been revealed about Blue Beetle, it has since been revealed that the project will focus on Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, who is in fact the third person to take up the Blue Beetle mantle. Much like the Blue Beetles before him, Reyes gains his powers after discovering a “sacred scarab,” which attaches to his back and morphs into the black and blue battle suit allowing him to fight both street-level crime and embark on loftier missions in space.
Created in 2005 by comic book superstars Keith Giffen and Cully Hamner alongside Hollywood screenwriter John Rogers, the relaunch of the character with Jamie Reyes, a Mexican-American teenager, under the blue armor proved to be one of DC’s most successful new launches in decades, with Reyes going on to feature in multiple comic book runs and animated shows, as well as a popular live-action one-off on Smallville.
Cobra Kai Has Prepared Xolo Maridueña to Join the Pantheon of DC Superheroes
Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña has previously explained how starring the critically-acclaimed karate show has prepared him for joining the pantheon of comic book movie heroes.
“This is really gonna be a stepping stone in my life,” he said. “I’ve gotten the chance to build chemistry with these people over the years on Cobra Kai. To try to recreate that chemistry in a much shorter amount of time is gonna be difficult, but all of these guys are professionals. I know that I’m in the hands of people who are the best at what they do. The opportunity at Cobra Kai has really blessed me; I can do stunts, we can do crazy stuff. Adding this new level of green screen and suits and CGI and all of this will add a whole new crazy level to it that I’m so excited for.”
Blue Beetle stars George Lopez (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood), Elpidia Carrillo (Predator), Damián Alcázar (Miss Bala), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.), with Susan Sarandon (Monarch) set to star as Victoria Kord, the movie’s main antagonist.
Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle will be released on August 18, 2023.
