Barbie Set Images Reveal First Look at Margot Robbie in Pink Bellbottoms

If there is a word to currently describe the upcoming Barbie movie, it is intriguing. After officially releasing a first look at Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, new set photos have given another look at Robbie in costume – a pink bellbottomed costume. While the Barbie movie has been in development for a long while, with stars like Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway having been previously attached to the film, Robbie certainly seems to look the part, but will the film really be a sweet and sugary as the images have suggested?

Simply hearing the words “Barbie Movie” is enough to send many parents running for the hills, but with Oscar-worthy stars like Robbie and Gosling on board, a supporting cast including America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell, and Greta Gerwig directing, there is most likely a lot more going on in this movie than anyone has let on so far. The project has been filming for a while now in the U.K. under very tight secrecy, which is why it has taken until now for set photos to surface. Check out Robbie as Barbie below.

Multiple Versions of Barbie and Ken Could Appear In The Movie

While there is no doubt that the images released so far seem to suggest that Robbie and Gosling will be playing pretty standard versions of Barbie and Ken in the movie, there have been reports that of the supporting cast,Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa will be playing alternative versions of the pair, and while this has yet to be confirmed, it just adds to the intrigue around the barely known plot of the film.

In other reports, Will Ferrell is said to be playing the CEO of a toy company, which could be Mattel, and could end up causing some kind of real Meta movie vibes if the plot involves a real-life Barbie and Ken finding themselves being the inspiration behind a toy line. While all of this is yet to be proven, Margot Robbie has previously said that she has a specific goal for the movie, and that is to deliver something that no one is expecting. She said:

“Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, “Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,” but our goal is to be like, “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”

However it turns out, there is clearly going to be a lot of interest in the Barbie movie, and it will be interesting to see the angle that first footage takes when a trailer for the film is finally released, probably later this year. For now though, with set photos starting to appear, it could be possible that we will get a few more clues what to expect in the near future.

Barbie will be released in movie theaters on July 21, 2023.
