On the list was none other than Obama, who serves as a narrator of the Netflix nature docuseries Our Great National Parks. That has put him up for Outstanding Narrator at the Emmys.

The other nominees for Outstanding Narrator at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for HISTORY’s Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War; David Attenborough for Discovery+’s The Mating Game; W. This is the first Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Obama, though the “Yes We Can” music video released as a promotional tool for the Obama campaign in 2008 was honored with the first-ever Daytime Emmy Award for Best New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment. Obama was also featured in the documentary David Attenborough Meets President Obama, which was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy in 2016, but was not for Obama personally. The former president has won a Grammy with a win in 2008 in the Spoken Word Album category as the narrator of The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream. He was recently nominated again for a Grammy in the same category for A Promised Land.

Netflix

Our Great National Parks is a collaboration between Wild Space, Higher Ground Productions, and Freeborne Media. Obama also executive produces the series with James Horneyborne and Tonia Davis. Sophia Todd produces. You can read the show’s official description below, per Netflix.

“Our Great National Parks invites viewers to experience nature in the world’s most iconic national parks. Spanning five continents, the series brims with wonder, humor, and optimism as each episode tells the story of a national park through the lives of its wildest residents — both big and exceptionally small — and explores our changing relationship with wilderness. Traveling from the waters of Monterey Bay, California, to the bright red soil of Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, the lush rainforests of Indonesia’s Gunung Leuser National Park, the majestic terrain of Chilean Patagonia, and more, Our Great National Parks beckons us to get out and explore, create new ways for these wild places to thrive, and vigorously preserve them for future generations to come.”

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama said in a statement in 2018 when first partnering up with Netflix. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix, we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

Our Great National Parks can be found streaming on Netflix. The Primetime Emmy Awards will be airing on NBC on Monday, Sept. 12, 2022. You can find the full list of nominees at Emmys.com.
